Originally branded The New Homesteader, the Woodsmoke Journal of Outdoor Survival and Self-Sufficient Living, a short-lived (6 years) "labor of love" created by the Olsen's and Jamison's, ran with hits and misses from 1977 to 1979. In 1980, issue #9 signaled changes to management by showing up more like a newsletter to subscribers, and with the name changed to Woodsmoke Journal of Survival and Self-Sufficiency. Issue #10 saw the original name back in place, remaining there through 1982 with issue #12. That same year the Jamison's published a compilation of journal articles in a book titled The Best of Woodsmoke followed by another compilation in 1985 called Primitive Outdoor Skills. The final issue of the journal appeared in fall of 1982 with the masthead Woodsmoke Journal of Primitive Skills and Outdoor Living. During those final years the Jamison's were also producing their landmark Woodsmoke video series. In 1994 the Jamison's assembled authors to create new articles for Woodsmoke: Collected Writings on Ancient Living Skills. Rights to this volume have circulated to a number of publishers, and is still in print.
